A guide to bullet journalling for beginners

21 July 2025

One old-school, analogue tool that is taking the stationery-loving world by storm is the bullet journal. We take a closer look.

In an age where people feel their lives are increasingly ruled by screens, the bullet journal, or ‘BuJo’ for short, is gaining popularity in helping us to stay organised, boost mindfulness, and regain a sense of control.

But what exactly is bullet journalling, and how do you get started? Whether you’re hoping to manage your time better, build new habits, or simply get your thoughts out of your head and onto the page, here’s a beginner-friendly guide to help you dip your toes into the world of bullet journalling.

What is a bullet journal?

The bullet journal is a flexible, customisable system, originally developed in America. It’s part diary, part planner, part to-do list – but the real beauty lies in how you can personalise it to make it your very own. Instead of following a rigid format, the bullet journal gives you the framework to design a system that fits your lifestyle.

You don’t need anything fancy to start – just a notebook (dotted, plain or lined will do) and a pen. Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need a dotted notebook and a lined, or even plain, notebook is ideal for the beginner.

How to set up a bullet journal

At its simplest, a bullet journal consists of four main sections:

•    Index – essentially this is your contents page. Number your pages and log them here so you can easily find what you’re looking for.

•    Future log – similar to an appointment’s diary, this is the space to jot down events, deadlines, or appointments coming up in the months ahead.

•    Monthly log - a simple calendar spread for the current month, along with a list of tasks and goals.

•    Daily log – this is your everyday space for jotting down to-do lists, events, notes, or reflections. Bullet points are used for simplicity, often with symbols to indicate tasks, events, and notes.

More experienced journallers may expand from these 4 areas to include other sections. These could include habit trackers, meal plans, budget pages, mood logs, reading diaries, and more. That’s where the personalisation – and the fun and creativity – really begins.

Why is bullet journalling so popular?

The bullet journal is beloved by many here in the UK for its blend of productivity and creativity. It’s ideal for those who feel overwhelmed by traditional planners or digital calendars. You can keep everything in one place: your schedule, your shopping list, your doodles, even your hopes and aspirations.

There’s also something deeply calming about sitting down with pen and paper. Many people find the act of journalling to be a mindful practice, helping them focus, reduce anxiety, and stay present.

Tips for beginner bullet journallers

Start simply - don’t get bogged down trying to make it Instagram-worthy. Focus on function over aesthetics.

Experiment - try different layouts or tracking methods to see what suits you best. There’s no “wrong” way to bullet journal.

Use what you’ve got - don’t feel pressured to buy expensive supplies. A basic notebook and ballpoint pen are enough to get you started.

Be consistent, not perfect - you don’t need to write every day. Even weekly updates can help you stay on track.
